US Bank has added Square to its digital wallet, an application enabling customers to make voice-recognisable purchases from their smartphones.

The iOS and Android Square wallet lets users in the US pay at the point of sale with their mobile device, simply by saying their name.

The firm’s technology automatically makes the transaction from a customer’s US Bank credit, debit or prepaid account without the cashier needing payment data.

When customers walk into a participating shop, the cashier is alerted on an in-store iPad with a thumbnail photo that they are on the premises. Square says the system offers security for shoppers, as the cashier must match the photograph before completing the transaction.

Dominic Venturo, from US Bank Payment Services, said the move would keep up with the changing way in which consumers shop. "Our goal is to be where our customers are, and with the evolving marketplace, it’s important for us to support a variety of state-of-the art payment solutions," he said.

Square reached a landmark in its business operations last year, when the company partnered with Starbucks to offer card reader and mobile payments technologies at locations across the US.

Chuck Kimble, head of strategic partnerships at Square, said: "The Wallet gives US Bank customers an easy and engaging way to discover and pay at great businesses in their neighbourhood – all from their phone."
