Stonewall has released its top 100 employers for 2018. All have made significant efforts towards creating a safe and inclusive work environment for every LGBT employee without exception.

Achieving top employer is the National Assembly for Wales, who have been present in the top 100 for a number of years, continuing to be active in promoting LGBT rights. But where are the banks?

Only five made the cut in the top 100. Lloyds Banking Group can take a round of applause for achieving number five and has been praised by Stonewall, featuring in the top 100 in previous years. Following close behind is Citi at number eight. J.P Morgan Chase & Co, Bank of America Merrill Lynch and RBS hold places 39, 56 and 83 respectively. Credit Suisse, that operates Credit Suisse Bank also placed at 93.

Lloyds Banking Group was recognised by Stonewall for continuing to stand beside the LGBT community with a range of transgender-inclusive policies including advertisements such as ‘This is who I am’. The bank has made outstanding efforts in previous years to create an equal and safe workplace, with campaigns such as the ‘He Said Yes’, as well as ‘Waiting for Mr or Mrs Right?’ which was launched in line with Bi Visibility Day.

With only five banks making the cut in this year’s top 100, one has to wonder why the banks are falling short. It’s not enough to just promote LGBT equality through advertisements, the banking sector needs to step up and address the issues that are having a negative impact on the LGBT community. Santander and HSBC didn’t make the list.

As well as achieving number eight on the list, Citi’s Clare Eastburn, who is the director and global head of operational regulatory change, was awarded ‘Bi Role Model of the Year’ by Stonewall. Eastburn is the co-chair of Citi’s Pride network in London and the committee’s bi representative, speaking frequently about her experience as a bi woman in the workplace.

“Now, when the protections established for LGBT people feel increasingly at risk and at the same time more important than ever, it’s the time for all employers to reflect on their responsibilities; not only to their employees but to the wider community.”

The top 100 is compiled from the Workplace Equality Index that is provided by Stonewall and used as a framework by employers to assess the progress they are making for their LGBT employees. The employers taking part are assessed in ten areas, including community engagement, training and if there is an employee network group to support members of the LGBT community.
