The Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) has added Host Card Emulation (HCE) to its RBC Mobile app.

This development allows Canadians to pay with most Android mobile phones without worrying about having the correct mobile network or SIM card. RBC is the first financial institution in North America to provide this option.

HCE allows clients to utilise any NFC-enabled Android phone to pay at point of sale with the RBC Mobile app anywhere in the world. The product will be first available to a group of RBC employees, starting December 18th, allowing them to pay with their RBC Interac Debit card. Visa and MasterCard is set to be added shortly.

Linda Mantia, executive vice president of digital, payments and cards, said: "HCE is a critical step. HCE makes RBC Secure Cloud mobile payments even easier to use."
