Google is opening a research lab focused on artificial intelligence (AI) in Beijing, China.

The tech giant has been re-building its presence in China, despite its search engine being blocked in the country.

The Chinese government has made AI research a top priority. In July, the government announced plans to develop an industry generating CNY400bn ($60 billion) of annual output by 2025 with the goal of becoming a world leader in AI science by 2030.

Fei-Fei Li, chief scientist at Google Cloud AI and Machine Learning, stated: “I believe AI and its benefits have no borders. Whether a breakthrough occurs in Silicon Valley, Beijing or anywhere else, it has the potential to make everyone’s life better.

“As an AI first company, this is an important part of our collective mission. And we want to work with the best AI talent, wherever that talent is, to achieve it.”

Google has said they aim to employ local talent for the new facility. From SIRI to self-driving cars to facial recognition software, artificial intelligence has been progressing rapidly across the world.
