The Banking Industry Architecture Network (BIAN) has announced its first African technology member, SCI, a pan-African technology consultancy and vendor.

The partnership between SCI and BIAN will seek to address a number of challenges in the African banking network, stemming from changes in channel banking and compliance to standards such as PCI-DSS (Payment Card Industry Date Security Standard) and SOX (Sarbanes-Oxley Act).

African banks are also enabling personal devices to access their networks, in a bid to increase productivity and efficiency, which opens an inherent security risk and requests for more tailored architectural support.

SCI seeks to streamline these infrastructures and work to a common standard for Africa’s banking system, reducing banks’ overall capital (CAPEX) and operating (OPEX) expenditure outlays.

BIAN’s standardised framework will enable SCI to work with a worldwide network of banking professionals who are using Service Orientated Architecture (SOA) to solve technology issues facing banks.

Hans Tesselaar, executive director of BIAN, said: "It is great to broaden BIAN’s reach to Africa. SCI is a technology vendor, meaning it objectively witnesses the technological demands placed on many of Africa’s banks today.

"In its partnership with BIAN, SCI will introduce SOA standards to many financial institutions, during an important time in the continent’s adoption of innovative technology," he added.

BIAN is a not-for-profit association, whose goal is to define SOA and semantic definitions for IT services in the banking industry and promote a common architectural framework for banking interoperability issues.
