Barclays is, reportedly, set to close some of its bank branches and relocate them to Asda stores in the UK, to offer its banking services for seven days a week and save money.

On a trial basis, the bank will initially close and move four of its branches, to Asda stores, with another four to follow by early 2014.

Beginning with Asda store at Birchwood, Cheshire, which will house the bank’s first in-store branch in February 2014, the lender would further open in-store branches at Asda stores in Pudsey, West Yorkshire; North Watford, Hertfordshire; and Broadstairs, East Kent.

Barclays will allow its existing staff at in-store branches to work on their usual working hours, but will provide automated services during the weekends.

The move will offer its customers the flexibility of longer opening hours and will also provide more convenient parking access, claims the bank.

Barclays retail bank head Steve Cooper said, "Our ambition is that by 2017 we will have an innovative and sustainable future-proof suite of branches that exist alongside a choice of ways our customers can contact us, so they will feel they can do things quicker and more effectively."
