The online platform of Barclays is the most secure banking website among all the UK’s largest retail banks and building societies, according to a new report by Forrester Research.

The research, which was based on Forrester’s website functionality benchmark methodology, also found that Barclays site offers the most extensive online banking functionality. Barclays was followed by Lloyds Bank and then Santander.

Barclays was awarded for scoring high in the account management, money movement, security and login, and electronic statement delivery categories.

According to Forrester Research analyst, Stephen Walker, each of the sites they reviewed in the UK does different things well, and their reviews uncovered many good practices that digital banking teams in the UK and elsewhere can learn from to plan for secure site upgrades in the future.

Despite this, the eight secure websites of UK’s largest banks including Barclays, Halifax, HSBC, Lloyds Bank, Nationwide Building Society, NatWest, Santander, and the Co-operative Bank performed poorly and lagged behind their counterparts in the US and Canada.

The report said UK banks are not helping customers make better decisions.

"Leading banks in other countries, such as Citibank in the US and mBank in Poland, provide advice and recommendations within the secure website, building on the diagnosis of the customers’ situation to offer clear guidance on what to do.

"None of the UK’s banks offer this type of guidance, which we think will be crucial in helping banks deliver on the promise of digital money management," the report added.
