PixelPin envisions a future with innovative, secure and engaging cybersecurity, that allows the consumer to personally interact with websites, mobile applications, and the overall process of data protection. In doing so, it puts an end to weak, alphanumeric passwords, that are easily infiltrated by hackers and cyber criminals.

Cyber security company, PixelPin, provides an alternative security solution, for individuals and enterprises, that uses visual, cloud-based technology to allow end-users to log into their personal online accounts with their favorite picture.

PixelPin vision is to create a solution that will make authentication easier, more secure and fun.

We want to give our users the possibility to replace long and hard to remember passwords with an innovative alternative: instead of digging in your memory, log-in using your favourite memories.

step away from the long, hard to remember, countless passwords and instead offer them a much simpler solution: use their own memories to log-in, not their memory!

How does PixelPin work?

PixelPin is very straightforward: the end-user chooses their favorite photo and selects four points consecutively to log in.

How did the PixelPin journey begin?

While conducting surveillance for the Police, Brian Taylor couldn’t help but notice his colleagues were constantly writing down their highly complicated, and easily forgettable, passwords every week. By questioning the security of such practices, he began imagining an alternative world with cybersecurity that meant more to the end-user than just a bunch of letters, numbers and characters.

In July 2012, the idea of using captured moments in life as ways to log into online platforms was founded. In 2016, PixelPin’s innovative security solution evolved into the two-factor dimension, allowing individuals and enterprises to enhance the security of their authentication.

The history of visual authentication

In 1973, Professor Allan Paivo introduced the theory of the ‘Picture Superiority Effect’. After carrying out scientific research, he concluded that the human brain can store visuals (images, and animations) faster and longer than words. 90% of information transmitted into human’s brains are visual.

Most of the technological inventions today, such as emoticons, Snapchat and Instagram, promote the relationship between technology and visual personalisation. People enjoy the idea of conveying their thoughts and emotions with visual representations, such as ‘emojis’, rather than words.

In 2015, the Oxford Dictionary named ‘emoji’ the word of the year. Moreover, Instagram and Snapchat have over 800 million active users between them.

How secure is PixelPin’s visual authentication?

GCHQ-certified ‘White Hat Hacker’ and CTO, Luke Briner, has ensured that PixelPin’s technology has been built to the highest standard. This has been proven by IRM who have penetration tested PixelPin and found zero vulnerabilities on multiple occasions.

The number of potential points on a picture is far greater than the number of characters on a keyboard, making pictures more secure than passwords or PINs. Plus, points can’t be guessed with the use of a dictionary, so your cybersecurity is entirely protected from the dictionary and brute force hacker, and mass phishing attacks are virtually impossible, given the strange technical complexities that would be involved.

At the same time, it is important to note that not only is PixelPin’s technology providing a two-factor authentication option for its users (a feature that will be mandatory for all FinTech or e-commerce websites, when PSD2 gets implemented in coming months), but it is encrypted to above military grade encryption (AES-256 and RSA-4096 encrypted for desktop and mobile services).
