Australian bank and financial-services provider Westpac is reportedly gearing up to roll out a 3D banking app in New Zealand , adding augmented reality to online banking experience.

A winning concept from the bank’s crowdsourcing initiative – The Westpac Global App Challenge – UK, the app is expected to be launched in September this year and would work on any Apple iOS smart device.

Leveraging the augmented reality technology, the new app will display information in 3D format. Users can check their credit and debit card balances, recent transactions and spending locations.

After downloading the 3D banking app, customers need to register relevant cards while opening an account with the bank. They can then slide their credit or debit card under their phone, which activates the camera. Information is then presented in 3D format.

The app can easily locate ATMs across the globe that were part of the ATM Global Alliance and could be used free of charge by Westpac customers.

"Our customers are always asking us for faster, easier ways to do their banking," Pomeroy told the news portal.
