US Bank has completed the migration of its approximately 5,000 automated teller machines (ATMs) to the Windows 7 operating system, becoming one of the first major banks to complete the conversion of its entire ATM fleet.

The recent move by the bank follows an announcement by Microsoft regarding termination of support to Windows XP operating system.

US Bank 24-Hour Banking executive vice president Jeannie Fichtel said that the bank is pleased to have completed conversion in a timely manner, avoiding future expense or exposure.

"Data security is very important to us, and while upgrading to Windows 7 is not our only defense, it is an important piece of our overall security measures," Fichtel added.

The migration to Windows 7 is also part of its plan to meet new technology enhancements including ATM deposit automation, compliance with enhanced accessibility rules from the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and replacement of older ATMs in the fleet.

The bank completed the transaction in collaboration with Diebold, for which, both companies signed an agreement in October 2013.
