Swedbank, Sweden’s largest bank by customers, has suffered a system failure that it put down to a routine update.

The bank has a backup system but while updates were being applied to one system, the other crashed, leaving the bank without technical support.

Spokeswoman Anna Sundblad said: "We have two independent systems, and when one goes down the other one should cover for it, but suddenly our second system also developed a problem.

"The likelihood of both systems going down is extremely small, but it has now happened."

The system crashed around 10.30pm on 10 April and was up and running again by 3am the next morning, meaning that most Swedes did not notice the problem.

Although few customers in Sweden were affected, some customers using Swedbank cards abroad reported being affected.
