State Bank of India (SBI) is investigating a suspected cyberattack after identifying 3,897 customer records containing Personally Identifiable Information (PII) among data published on the dark web.

The bank was alerted to the potential exposure by its Threat Intelligence Service Provider, the Defence Cyber Agency, and CERT-In, the bank said in a stock exchange filing.

SBI then reviewed approximately 375,000 records available on the dark web.

According to the lender’s preliminary findings, the affected records included customer names, mobile numbers, dates of birth, email addresses, residential addresses, brand and customer identifiers, and loan records.

SBI has appointed an independent cybersecurity agency to examine the incident and establish the nature and extent of the data leak.

The investigation will assess whether the material is authentic and complete, identify the possible source of the exposure, and evaluate risks for customers and the bank.

“A detailed investigation was required to establish the authenticity and completeness of the exposed data, determine the potential source and extent of the exposure, and assess the associated risks to customers and the Bank,” the bank said in a statement.

The lender said the incident is not expected to have any “material impact” on its core business operations, financial performance or business continuity.

Last month, SBI chairman CS Setty told PTI that the bank planned to recruit about 11,000 to 12,000 employees and add up to 250 branches in the current financial year.

The recruitment programme was to cover clerical and officer roles.

SBI’s annual report recorded 25,633 hires in 2025-26, comprising 4,640 officers, 19,340 associates, and 1,653 contractual staff. Setty said the total was elevated because the bank recruited 1,500 specialist IT officers during the previous year.

As of March 2026, SBI had more than 245,000 employees.
