Mox Bank (Mox), a virtual bank backed by Standard Chartered, has officially launched in Hong Kong and is now accessible to everyone.

The new virtual bank provides a suite of fully-digital retail banking services over its app.

Customers can open a zero-balance bank account within minutes, for free, with Mox.

The cloud-based digital bank is also launching Asia’s first all-in-one numberless bank card, designed to protect customers’ personal information.

The card supports near-field communication (NFC) technology. Customers just need to tap the card on their phone to activate it.

Customers will be able to name their account, lock and unlock the Mox Card, and will be empowered with tailored customer service.

Moreover, Mox is offering a Savings Calculator and other tools to help customers save money.

Customers can monitor real-time account activity and balance and instantly categorise their transactions.

Mox will also support Apple Pay and Google Pay payments online, in-apps, and in-stores.

Standard Chartered group CEO Bill Winters said: “The launch of Mox demonstrates the pace at which Standard Chartered is executing and moving on its strategic objectives, innovating and disrupting across our markets through digitisation.

“We are now combining our heritage as the oldest note-issuing bank in Hong Kong with being the newest virtual bank in the city, providing customers with an even broader array of banking options to meet their different needs, preferences, and lifestyles.”

Mox CEO Deniz Güven said: “After two years of hard work, we are so excited to officially unveil Mox – a bank that is built by and for Hong Kong people who want banking to be truly personalised and digital. We hope to take Standard Chartered’s commitment to customer experience, innovation, and financial inclusion to the next level.”

Back in April, Mox initially opened its services to selected external customers in Hong Kong, only on an invitation basis.

The external pilot was aimed at gathering feedback and preparing Mox for the official launch.

Standard Chartered, in partnership with PCCW, HKT, and Trip.com, first unveiled the Mox virtual brand for Hong Kong, earlier last month.

Standard Chartered also launched a banking-as-a-service solution named nexus to offer a suite of private-label products and services to its clients.
