Standard Chartered (StanChart), the UK-based
but emerging markets focused lender, has launched ‘Breeze’, an
iPhone application that allows customers to send the “world’s first
e-cheque”.

Customers can write and issue cheques using
their mobile phone alongside regular features such as paying bills,
transferring funds and managing finances.

Aman Narain, StanChart’s head of remote
banking told RBI: “[Breeze is] definitely very interesting
for us. It does some nifty things [and]….we see that space evolving
for us quite significantly.”

Some initial feedback from the app posted on
the website, Breeze.standardchartered.com, includes one reviewer
who was “pleasantly surprised by StanChart.  If you have
previously given up hope on mobile banking, this may change your
mind”.

StanChart reported “double digit” growth for
its consumer banking division in the first quarter of 2010 compared
to the corresponding quarter a year ago, according to a market
update issued by the bank.
