SIX Payment Services has begun a pilot of an innovative ATM project to develop a centralised operating system for all ATMs of Swiss banks.

The new centralised multivendor software, named ATMfutura, will replace over 20 individual solutions from four different manufacturers.

SIX said that the move will simplify operations by supporting new functions that have hitherto only worked at individual banks. These functions include cash withdrawals and deposits at the ATM via smartphone the talking ATM, function for the visually impaired, choice of individual bank note denominations.

The first cash dispenser fitted with ATMfutura is currently being piloted at the Credit Suisse Oerlikon branch. The bank plans to gradually deploy the software at other ATMs at its Oerlikon branch including ones having combined deposit/withdrawal functionality.

The next to pilot the technology will be Swiss banking giant UBS. All Swiss banks are expected to deploy the new software from 2018, SIX said.

SIX Payment Services division CEO Jurg Weber said: “Standardizing ATMs will allow the banks to simplify numerous processes over the long term, and in this way benefit not only from cost advantages, but also from a stronger concentration on their key business. The customers benefit from the simplified services.”

Credit Suisse (Switzerland) head of products & investment services Florence Schnydrig Moser said: “Thanks to the standard user interface, all customers will have a consistent and enjoyable user experience at every ATM, irrespective of which bank it is being operated by.”

The new software is also expected to facilitate central monitoring of ATMs, and offer a centralised function for the complete value chain including evaluating locations, installing, maintaining and disposing of ATMs, and refilling them with cash.
