Scotiabank has forged a sponsorship agreement with the Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association (PWHPA).

This agreement makes the Canadian lender the official bank of the PWHPA, a nonprofit organisation involved in the promotion of professional women’s ice hockey.

This partnership confirms the entry of the bank into the 2021 Secret Dream Gap Tour.

As per the agreement, players in Calgary city will be part of the ‘Team Scotiabank’ and compete against four other PWHPA teams for the ‘Secret Cup’.

The dates of the tour will be announced by the PWHPA early next year, and related information to the tour will be available at pwhpa.com.

In the new year, Scotiabank and PWHPA are also teaming up on a mentorship programme for young female players.

PWHPA operations consultant Jayna Hefford said: “The PWHPA is thrilled to welcome Scotiabank to our team of incredible partners who continue to stand with us, and advocate for the creation of a viable and sustainable professional women’s hockey league.”

Scotiabank, which is also known as ‘Canada’s Hockey Bank’, is said to have a long history of supporting female players in hockey.

Since 2006, the bank has engaged over 4,200 girls in the Scotiabank Girls HockeyFest.

Its other initiatives include Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada, The Scotiabank Skaters Contest, Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL), and a Scotiabank’s Hockey 24 documentary.

Scotiabank chief marketing officer Laura Ferrera said: “We are proud to support the PWHPA and their efforts towards making ice hockey more inclusive for women.

“When we do this, young girls from all backgrounds can go on to inspire future generations of players and build a more inclusive game.”

PWHPA player Bridgette Lacquette added: “Sponsors such as Scotiabank are making it possible for women and young girls to pursue their dreams and achieve success at the highest level possible.”

Scotiabank is also the upcoming sponsor of the 2021 IIHF Women’s World Championship in collaboration with Hockey Canada.
