Sberbank, a Russian banking group, has launched an investigation to find out the details of a potential leak of personal data.

The incident is said to have compromised credit card details, affecting at least 200 Sberbank customers.

However, the bank ensured that the data stolen would not hamper the safety of customer funds.

The bank also rejected the role of external players in the matter, saying that its database has no outer network access.

The bank believes that the incident may have been caused by the misconduct of an employee.

Sberbank said that it is working with law authorities to minimise the effects of the incident.

Sberbank first deputy chairman of the executive board Alexander Vedyakhin said: “We’d like to thank the media for their understanding approach and their unbiased coverage of the issues pertaining to the information security of our citizens.

“Sberbank is working closely with law enforcement bodies and the Central Bank of Russia to solve the crime as soon as possible. Let me take this opportunity to remind everyone of the cyber security basics: Bank employees never ask your PIN code, your SMS passwords, or your CVC code.

“If someone wants you to give them one, be sure it’s fraud. Never tell your PIN code, SMS passwords, or CVC codes to anyone.”
