Borealis AI, a Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) Institute for Research, is set to establish an artificial intelligence (AI) lab in Montreal.

Borealis AI will collaborate with the Montreal Institute for Learning Algorithms (MILA) and McGill University professor Jackie Cheung on the initiative. Cheung, who is an expert in the field of natural language processing (NLP), will serve as academic adviser at the lab.

The new lab, which is expected to open in early 2018, will join other Borealis AI labs in Toronto and Edmonton.

Borealis AI head and RBC chief science officer Foteini Agrafioti said: “Montreal has emerged as a global centre for research in artificial intelligence and I’m excited to be participating in this community.

“We’re committed to helping advance the field through the creation of intellectual property and look forward to providing new opportunities for the enormous talent already doing exceptional research in the region.”

At the same time, RBC together with the Bank of Montreal (BMO) also announced plans to invest $4m in the Creative Destruction Lab Montreal (CDL-Montreal), a startup support programme focused on AI. The programme is the result of a partnership between HEC Montreal and the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management.

“By partnering with the Creative Destruction Lab and investing in their Montreal location, we want to ensure startups in the region find the network of support and resources they need to compete on the global stage where they belong,” Agrafioti noted.
