UK financial technology merger and
acquisition activity is set to pick up in 2010, according to a
report from consultants PricewaterhouseCoopers. While fintech
M&A activity in 2009 hit a six-year low, the right conditions
appear to be in place to spur recovery within the sector, reports
Douglas
Blakey.

UK technology M&A activity will
increase in 2010 as deal pipelines and activity levels increase,
according to a report from consultants PricewaterhouseCoopers
(PwC).

The decline in global technology deals was
mirrored in the UK in 2009 with completed deal volumes down over 60
percent (66 to 25), and value falling 52 percent from €6.8 billion
(€9.2 billion) in 2008 to €3.3 billion, a six-year low.

Andy Morgan, partner at Pricewater–
houseCoopers, said: “Recovery in UK tech M&A appears less
pronounced than in the US where mega-deal announcements have
provided momentum.

“However, the right conditions now appear to
be in place to mean a tipping point into the next stage of the deal
cycle and local confidence is finally starting to return.”

Morgan said that while high-profile banking
casualties inevitably caused problems for FinTech vendors, a number
of positive market drivers have since spurred recovery within the
sector:

• A significant increase in
financial regulation;

• Heightened compliance;

• Demand for further risk management
solutions;

• Volume of financial data being
processed; and

• Focus on cost reduction and
improving efficiencies by expanding and upgrading IT systems.
