Banking firm ING has joined a taskforce to further boost the artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem in the Netherlands.

The taskforce, which also includes Ahold Delhaize, KLM, NS and Philips, seeks to accelerate and promote the development of AI technology and nurturing AI talent in the country.

The companies are forming Kickstart AI to bridge the AI gap between the Netherlands and other countries.

ING chief analytics officer Görkem Köseoğlu said the bank was constantly looking for ways to use new technology for the benefit of customers and to make banking safer.

“AI brings tremendous opportunities in making banking more personal, easier and empowering for customers. We also use AI to better monitor financial transactions and protect the health of the financial system.”

The Dutch banking firm currently employs several data scientists and data engineers to continuously look for new ways to enhance its business.

Kickstart AI will undertake a series of initiatives that include AI superchallenges, Joint appointments and Dutch national course for AI.

Earlier this year, ING took academic approach to AI by combining its knowledge and expertise on AI with TU Delft (the Delft University of Technology) in a new AI fintech lab.

The AI for FinTech Lab is part of the Dutch Innovation Centre for Artificial Intelligence. It will be on two locations: at the university’s campus in Delft and the new campus area that ING is developing in Amsterdam Southeast.
