DBS has snapped up six awards at the 35th annual global RBI Awards including Best Global Retail Bank.

Other DBS awards wins recognise the success of the bank’s digital innovation and multichannel strength.

In particular, DBS wins the award for best branch strategy and best digital strategy.

DBS also collects the awards for best payment innovation, best service innovation and most disruptive innovation.

35th annual global RBI awards: multiple wins for Emirates NBD, NatWest

It is a good night also for Emirates NBD. The bank collects the award for best global bank Middle East and best use of digital marketing and social media.

Sadly, for obvious reasons, the 35th annual global RBI awards is not a formal celebration at its regular venue, the Waldorf Hilton in London. But this year’s awards incorporate a number of outstanding winners, suitably recognised at a virtual awards ceremony on 24 June.

This year the awards constitute 26 categories, celebrating the best of the best in global retail banking.

Other multiple winners include the UK’s NatWest.

It scoops the awards for best customer facing technology and best open banking strategy.

The most competitive category and the most difficult to adjudicate is the best mobile banking category.

The shortlist ran into double figures with strong entries from banks in the US and Canada, Spain, Israel and especially Asia Pacific.

In the end, the award goes to HSBC for its mobile X global app launched across 34 markets.

Another double winner is Cathay United, winning best use of online and best self-service strategy.

RBI banker of the year, Neil McLaughlin, RBC

Financial performance, competitive differentiation, innovation, client loyalty, employee engagement and community impact – thanks to Neil McLaughlin’s leadership, RBC’s retail bank tops the charts in every area. Combine that with a leadership style that conveys confidence and inspires everyone to reach higher, and you have a leader that can navigate the bank today and well into the future especially during times of crises that bring new opportunities.

Specifically, RBC wins three awards: best retail North America and Lat/Am Caribbean and best loyalty/rewards strategy. And RBC’s Group Head, Personal & Commercial Banking at Royal Bank of Canada, Neil McLaughlin is recognised as RBI retail banker of the year.

Another Canadian winning bank is Scotiabank. It set out to transform its financial crime risk management programme and future-proof its capabilities.

Scotiabank is recognised in the category for Retail Banking security innovation of the year.

RBI editor and chair of the judges Douglas Blakey said: “I appreciate that at this time especially, there are more important priorities for banks than awards. But despite everything that is happening there is genuine innovation and product investment going on that deserves to be recognised.

“The awards are now into their 35th year and again attracted a high calibre of entries, for which many thanks. Already, we are looking forward to the 36th annual awards, hopefully back at the Waldorf.”
