Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) has upgraded its mobile banking app by adding the Face ID authentication option, a facial recognition technology that is built into Apple’s iPhone X.

The new technology enables iPhone X users to log-in to the CommBank App.

CBA is the first Australian bank to provide the service, which performs in-depth mapping of an individual’s face using over 30,000 reference points.

CBA executive general manager of digital Pete Steel said: “Our customers use secure fingerprint logins on the CommBank App about 30m times a month. Extending that functionality to Face ID is part of our ongoing work to provide a better banking experience to our customers through simple, easy and secure features.

“While we strive towards convenience and ease of use, we don’t implement new technology without being able to guarantee security for customers.”
