Citi has partnered with Mastercard to launch ‘True Name’ credit cards for transgender and non-binary people in the US.

The bank said that its existing credit cardmembers can request for a new credit card, effective immediately.

Mastercard unveiled its True Name initiative in 2019 for banking cards to reflect the true identities for promoting equality of transgender and non-binary communities.

Citi is said to be the first banking giant to offer “True Name” on its US credit cards.

Mastercard EVP of marketing & communications Cheryl Guerin said: “Since introducing the True Name feature, we have received incredible feedback from our partners and allies within the transgender and non-binary communities on how the capability has eased a major pain point in their lives.

“By working with Citi and its significant network, we’re thrilled that we’ll be able to extend the reach and impact of the True Name initiative.”

The bank said that in the coming weeks it will also serve its transgender customers with their chosen name via online and mobile, or telephone channels.

Citi chief marketing officer Carla Hassan said: “At Citi, we are passionate about ensuring our customers feel recognized, accepted and empowered to be their true selves.

“We are incredibly proud to launch the True Name feature, through our relationship with Mastercard, because we strongly believe that our customers should have the opportunity to be called by the name that represents who they really are.”

Back in June 2020, BMO Harris enabled more cardholders to use Mastercard True Name feature.
