CaixaBank’s imagin, a mobile-only bank for young people, has launched a sustainability plan to reduce environmental impact and encourage third parties to do the same.

The announcement comes a month after CaixaBank relaunched the challenger to promote the growth and loyalty of young customers.

To begin with, the platform will concentrate on five of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agreed by the UN in its 2030 Agenda. These goals include sustainable cities and communities; responsible production and consumption; climate action; life below water; and life on land.

Through imaginPlanet, a themed area for content and services within the imagin app, the platform aims to bring together useful content on sustainability and provide information about projects and initiatives that will benefit both the planet and society.

As part of its efforts, imagin proposes to reforest a mountain in Cantabria, after a fire plagued the region in 2016. The project will begin on 25 July and is in collaboration with popular digital influencer Daniel Illescas.

Illescas plans to cycle through northern Spain to the mountain and for every kilometre cycled, imagin will plant a tree. In addition, through imaginPlanet, Spanish sailor Didac Costa will educate customers on the importance of preserving the environment.

imagin also plans to join forces with European movement Too Good to Go, which promotes the avoidance of food waste. To do this, the organisation creates digital content to increase awareness of the problem.

For new imagin customers, sustainable actions like donations to charitable causes or reforestation will replace conventional gifts.

Furthermore, imagin encourages similar measures among its employees. For instance, the challenger maintains that its bank branches are already committed to a ‘paperless and non-plastic culture’. It also encourages the use of eco-friendly mobility by employees.

Due to its sustainability strategy, imagin is now in the final stages of gaining the B Corp label. According to the UK Certified B Corporation, B Corps are companies that ‘meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose’.
