Spanish banking group BBVA has signed a global cloud computing agreement with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to accelerate the bank’s global transformation.

The bank has already been using AWS to operate its analytics application for retailers Commerce 360 (currently available in Spain).

The latest agreement will make AWS the preferred cloud infrastructure services provider for the bank. BBVA will now look to migrate selected components of its platforms to the cloud, and create a ‘cloud community’ to enhance knowledge sharing and regulatory compliance.

BBVA Engineering global head Ricardo Moreno said: “The digital transformation of our business means that our technology platforms must be prepared to face an exponential transactions growth and cloud computing technologies have much to contribute in this direction.

“Working with AWS and having them accompany us on this journey not just with their products but also with their expertise, will accelerate our transformation.”

In February 2016, BBVA selected technology provider Cisco as its priority technology partner to support the bank’s digital transformation process. In May 2016, the bank announced a strategic collaboration with Red Hat, a provider of enterprise open source solutions, to further accelerate its global transformation.
