Barclays UK has restored its online banking service, which suffered a technical glitch on 8 November 2018.

The technical problem left several of its customers without access to their online accounts. However, the services resumed for all customers during the later part of the day.

Barclays Technical Glitch

A Barclays spokesman confirmed to Reuters about the technical glitch. However, he did not reveal the number of customers affected by the incident.

The outage was reported at a time when Barclays is being investigated for another similar outage in September that affected online, telephone as well as branch services.

Barclays and its domestic rival RBS, has been asked by a lawmaker committee to reveal causes for the September outage.

The two banks are also required to put forward their plans as to how they wish to compensate the affected customers.

With digital banking gaining ground over conventional banking services, such online banking outages are becoming more frequent in the UK.

Another UK-based lender TSB suffered such outages for extended periods multiple times this year. The subsequent chaos caused severe damage to its reputation and also led to the resignation of its CEO Paul Pester.

Recently, Barclays performed poorly in the European Banking Authority’s EU-wide stress test. It recorded a core capital ratio of 6.37%, marginally higher than the threshold mark of 5.5%.

The test, which evaluated 48 banks, assessed their ability to withstand market shocks.
