Atom Bank, a British challenger bank built exclusively for mobile, has opened doors to all UK customers.

This will allow anyone downloading the Atom App in IoS and Android to open an account. In April 2016, the Durham-based bank launched its banking app that could be accessed by only those customers who had registered an interest in the new bank via its website.

At present, the bank offers two fixed saver accounts, and SME lending via a panel of specialist business intermediaries. Over the coming months, the bank plans to offer residential mortgages, current accounts, debit card, overdrafts and instant access savings through its mobile app.

Atom CEO Mark Mullen said: “We are creating an entirely new way to bank; a system that is based on what the customer needs and wants, rather than being focused on bank balance sheets.

“We’ve been steadily growing our business to date and this is an exciting new phase where we can offer our Fixed Saver rates to anyone who wants them. We’re already working on our current account, so there’s much more to come.”

The challenger bank, created in April 2014, is led by CEO Mark Mullen and chairman Anthony Thomson. In November 2015, Spanish banking group BBVA agreed to acquire a 29.5% stake in the bank for £45m, becoming its largest shareholder.
