AEON Bank, a subsidiary of AEON Financial Service, has become the first financial institution in Japan to install EMV-compliant ATMs, following certification received by global payment technology firm MasterCard.

Supporting EMV chip card transactions, the EMV-compliant ATMs provide improved security for foreign-issued debit and credit cards, according to MasterCard.

Designed as an international standard for IC chips, EMV is used in payment card transactions to ensure high security of user information. In order to protect consumers from unauthorized use of their card data, EMV encrypts the card data, read and transmitted by ATMs and other terminals.

MasterCard chief franchise integrity officer Eileen Simon said, "The entire MasterCard team extends its appreciation to Aeon Bank for partnering to provide ATM access for MasterCard and Maestro cardholders traveling to Japan."

"Aeon quickly recognized the benefits of employing Chip and PIN technology in their ATMs throughout Japan, enabling both Aeon Bank and hundreds of millions of MasterCard and Maestro cardholders access to the newest, most secure method of conducting ATM transactions."
