Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank (ADIB) in the UAE has started using facial recognition technology to enable opening of accounts remotely and digitally.

The lender has signed an agreement to utilise Ministry of interior’s Facial Recognition verification system to onboard new customers.

Facial recognition: Benefits

ADIB will utilise the new technology to verify the identity of the applicant. The usage is expected to make the onboarding process seamless as well as prevent fraud and identity theft.

Additionally, the move will allow the local citizens to open an account remotely eliminating the need to visit a branch.

In a statement, ADIB said that it is the first UAE bank to use facial recognition for account opening.

ADIB Branch Network head Sameh Awadallah said: “Together with MOI, we are enabling for the first time in the UAE, residents to open an instant digital account in a secure and seamless way.

“The use of facial recognition system is key step for ADIB towards the implementation of emerging technologies based on Artificial Intelligence (AI).

“Thus, in line with UAE’s digital agenda, we have been introducing digital solutions over the years that provide convenient and more seamless way to bank.”

Availability

The facial recognition system service is available on the ADIB mobile banking app.

The UAE residents can download the app and follow the instructions to open a bank account. The users are required to take a photo and scan their passports. They can tap their Emirates ID card on the device for the app to read its data from the built-in chip using Near Field Communication.

Subsequently, the tool will match the user’s face against the ministry’s facial recognition system. After authentication, ADIB will verify the customer by sending a SMS OTP, following which, the user can advance to create an account.

Other Developments at ADIB

In May, Diebold Nixdorf announced that ADIB has started introducing digital smart teller ATMs at key branches.

These kiosks will offer essential banking services round the clock.
