North America’s financial services industry saw a rise of 14.8% in overall deal activity during Q4 2020, when compared to the four-quarter average, according to GlobalData’s deals database.

A total of 443 deals worth $46.14bn were announced for the region during Q4 2020, against the last four-quarter average of 386 deals.

Of all the deal types, M&A saw most activity in Q4 2020 with 325, representing a 73.4% share for the region.

In second place was venture financing with 76 deals, followed by private equity deals with 42 transactions, respectively capturing a 17.2% and 9.5% share of the overall deal activity for the quarter.

In terms of value of deals, M&A was the leading category in North America’s financial services industry with $39.57bn, while private equity and venture financing deals totalled $4.94bn and $1.63bn, respectively.

The top five financial services deals accounted for 64.2% of the overall value during Q4 2020.

The combined value of the top five financial services deals stood at $29.64bn, against the overall value of $46.14bn recorded for the quarter.

1) The $9bn merger of Foley Trasimene AcquisitionII and Paysafe Group

2) The $7bn acquisition of Eaton Vance by Morgan Stanley

3) The $6bn merger of TCF Financial and Huntington Bancshares

4) The $3.94bn acquisition of MetLife Auto & Home Insurance Agency by Farmers Exchanges and Farmers Group

5) The merger of Clover Health and Social Capital Hedosophia HoldingsIII for $3.7bn.
