The research, which was carried out by Empathy Research and involved 422 participants, found that 90% of Irish smartphone users perform online banking, while 70% carry out mobile banking operations.

According to the survey, in the last 12 months, 31% of people signed up to mobile banking.

The survey also found that 45% of smartphone owners are likely to use internet through a mobile device, while the remaining use desktops including laptops.

Ulster Bank direct banking head Brian Allen was quoted by Business & Leadership as saying that their survey results gave them some great insights and produced very interesting trends.

"Over 44pc of smartphone owners access their bank website or app at least once a week; 80pc use online or mobile banking to check their bank account balance; 36pc use it to transfer money and 28pc use it to pay bills," Allen added.
