Around £11.4bn cash will be withdrawn from ATMs in the UK in December 2013, which accounts to over £367m per day, according to an estimation by Britain’s Sainsbury’s Bank.

According to the supermarket bank, the number of cash withdrawals will increase by three million to around 164 million in December 2013, compared to last year December.

The lender also expects ATM usage, including number of transactions and total cash withdrawals, to be highest on 20 December 2013, as usually the Friday before Christmas is busy for pre-Christmas cash withdrawals.

With 1,465 ATMs spread across the UK, the bank expects to dispense around approximately £915m from its machines through 12.8 million transactions in December 2013.

Sainsbury’s Bank ATMs head Iain Gibson said December is once again shaping up to be a busy time of year for ATMs and this peak in usage will undoubtedly go hand in hand with Christmas shopping.

"Planning ahead for when you’ll need cash could help to save time queuing in a busy spell – for example, you could collect money from an ATM when picking up your groceries," Gibson added.
