Nationwide has become the first UK financial institution to roll out Visa’s digital wallet V.me for online shopping.

V.me allows registered users to make safe payments online only by using a username and a password, without manually entering information for every transaction.

Online merchants such as Clarks, Currys and PC World already accept V.me and the plan is to expand that number to more than 4,000 merchants later in the year.

Nationwide has announced that the service will be available for all its 6.5m credit and debit card customers. Customers can load up to ten different cards when they register to the service.

Graham Beale, Nationwide’s chief executive, said: "In 1997 Nationwide were first to offer the UK consumer internet banking and we are always looking to invest in ways to improve the customer experience by pioneering new technology."

V.me’s launch partner was actually RBS, which initiated trials in November 2012, but Nationwide is the first partner to roll the wallet out fully.

Currently the two banks represent 80% of all consumers committed to the programme, but Visa says that by 2020, one third of all European consumers will be using V.me’s wallet.
