New Zealand lender TSB Bank has deployed a new online identification system, RealMe, to offer its customers with online services.
Developed by New Zealand government’s Department of Internal Affairs and New Zealand Post, the RealMe system was initially designed to allow users to safely interact with government agencies. The system is likely to be made available for use in private sector too.

As part of its plan, the bank is now running a pilot programme and allowing its customers to open accounts through their mobile devices rather than visiting a branch and providing identification, as the system approves identity remotely online.
New Zealand Internal Affairs minister Chris Tremain said people with a RealMe verified account can join TSB Bank using RealMe on their bank’s iPhone app.
"There’s no need to supply identity documents during the sign up process to prove who you are. You can do it all from the mobile app with the RealMe service.
"RealMe enables proof of identity online to a high degree of confidence. It is the online equivalent of walking up to a counter and showing your driver licence or passport. It also enables people to login to multiple government services securely with a single username and password," Tremain added.
