Absa is planning to bring paperless banking to the rest of Africa after opening its concept branch in Johannesburg in June this year.
The South African bank, owned by Barclays, is embarking on a $121m plan to refurbish its retail branches in Africa.
Absa will open 35 paperless branches in South Africa and another 25 in the rest of Africa by the end of 2013.
The bank’s Johannesburg paperless "branch of the future" is the first of its kind in South Africa, featuring self service kiosks to shorten queues and one-serves-all counters so customers do not need to queue twice.
There will be no glass barriers between staff and customers in the new banks. For security, all cash is handed by teller cash recycling machines that take deposits or allow for cash withdrawals.
