Singapore-based OCBC Bank has rolled out conversational banking services powered by Siri, Apple’s virtual assistance, to make banking simpler for its customers.

OCBC claims to be the first bank in Singapore to allow its customers to make their day-to-day banking and cashless payment transactions using voice commands.

Its retail banking customers can also use Siri to check their bank balances, credit card balances and make instant e-payments.

The e-payments can be made to any bank account in Singapore, including to those accounts not linked to the PayNow service, a peer-to-peer funds transfer service that allows fund transfers using mobile or NRIC numbers.

OCBC Bank head of e-business Singapore Aditya Gupta said: “This is the new digital – conversational, more natural and faster access to banking! This latest service marks a major milestone in banking as it brings us one huge leap closer to making natural language voice-activated banking and payments a reality.

“This is just a start – we will continue to embed ourselves in our customers’ everyday lives using voice-powered AI tools which they will be able to use for more banking transactions such as bill payments, money management and common servicing requests in the future!”

The voice-powered conversational banking service is available for users of the updated version of OCBC’s mobile banking app. Users of this service can simply ask questions such as “Hey Siri, what’s my balance?”, or “How much money do I have in my bank account?”, or “What is my credit card spend?”.

Customers can also tell Siri whom to send the money to and how much to send, following which the transaction will be verified using fingerprint or facial recognition technology.

Developed by OCBC’s in-house mobile developer and e-business teams, the voice banking service is available to the bank’s customers with iPhones running at least iOS11, and the latest versions of the OCBC Mobile Banking and OCBC Pay Anyone apps.

Currently, authentication of transactions through facial recognition is available only on iPhone X devices.
