UK-based Metro Bank has announced that customers who do not identify with a specific gender will be able to choose Mx as a title and non-binary as a gender

Customers will have three gender options when they open an account with Metro Bank: male, female, or nonbinary, with the option to use the title Mx, rather than Mr, Mrs or Ms. This will not only apply to customers of the bank, but colleagues as well.

Metro Bank opened in 2010, offering private, business, and retail banking – with online, telephone, and app services as well as over 40 branches across London and the South East. Earlier this year it launched an internal LGBT organisation, which encourages dialogue and discussion with heterosexual members of staff.

Danny Harmer, Metro Bank’s chief people officer, said: “At Metro Bank, we have the opportunity to help drive forward equality and we’re proud to be taking an active stand on this issue.

“Our ‘no stupid bank rules’ approach means exactly that, and not offering people the option to identify themselves as they choose is a barrier that we’re pleased to have removed.”

“We hope that today’s announcement will help encourage others to follow in our footsteps,” Harmer added.
