South Africa-based First National Bank (FNB) has rolled out its banking app and other digital products and services in seven African nations including Zambia, Namibia, Botswana, Swaziland, Lesotho, Tanzania and Mozambique.

The banking app is currently used by more than 600,000 active users in the South African markets, while the Mobi site is being used by over 8,800, claims the bank.

With the launch of digital banking services, consumers in the new nations will have access to the bank’s eWallet service, free messages and calls between app users and GeoPayments, a cashless person-to-person payment service.

FNB Africa chief operating officer Leonard Haynes said they are pleased to be taking digital banking to these markets and to be empowering their clients with their mobile solutions such as the App and Mobi.

"This is an opportunity to contribute meaningfully towards the banking sector in our African subsidiaries," Haynes added.

FNB mobile and connect expansion head Michael Kloeck said global trends indicate that Apps and digital in Africa should not be ignored.
