Around 1,037 ATMs were, reportedly, closed by the local police in the Indian city of Bangalore, following failure by several banks to meet the deadlines set to implement security measures at the ATM centres.

The government had directed all the banks to install CCTV cameras, fix alarm systems and post security guards at the centres.

The security measures were mandated by the government and the Reserve Bank of India after a woman was brutally assaulted in a Corporation Bank ATM on 19 November.

A survey by The Times of India found that several financial institutions failed to comply with the measures on time.

Bangalore City Police commissioner Raghavendra H Auradkar said, "We will prohibit transactions from happening there with immediate effect."

The Bangalore city police have so far closed around 142 ATMs in West zone, 80 in Central, 234 in South, 160 in North, 191 in East, 165 in South East and 65 in North East zone.
