Indian mobile payments go live
Initially, the service will be available to the retail customers of seven banks: State Bank of India (SBI), Bank of India, Union Bank of India, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank and YES Bank. An additional 22 banks in the country including Citibank, Standard Chartered and Canara Bank are at varying stages of joining up to the scheme, launched by the Reserve Bank-backed National Payments Council India (NPCI).

Chase to ‘de-emphasise debit’
Chase, the retail banking unit of JPMorgan Chase, is to scrap its rewards scheme for new debit card customers from February. At the same time, Chase will eliminate debit card usage as a way for new customers to avoid paying its monthly checking account fee. Chase has been among the most vocal of US retail banks to criticise the financial reform bill designed to lower debit card interchange fees the so-called Durbin amendment.
Standard Bank ends cricket, soccer sponsorship
South Africa-based Standard Bank is to end its 13-year sponsorship of Cricket South Africa and ditch its sponsorship of soccer teams Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. In a statement, Standard Bank said the decision to end the sports sponsorship deals would improve business efficiencies across its business.
Chase extends remote cheque deposit with Android app
Chase, the retail, banking arm of JPMorgan Chase, has released a mobile banking app for Android-enabled handsets, complementing its existing iPhone m-banking application. To use the Android app, customers need to be enrolled with Chases internet banking service The facility enables Chase customers to check their balance, pay bills, make credit card payments, and locate the nearest branch or ATM using GPS technology.
Westpac agrees 5 year deal with IBM
Westpac has renewed its IT outsourcing deal with IBM for a further five years The agreement extends a 10-year, $2.3bn deal inked by the parties in 2000. The deal covers the operation of Westpacs key infrastructure services, including data centre, mainframe, midrange, storage, desktop, print and security operations.
