French banking major BNP Paribas has named Jean Lemierre as new director and chairman of the board of directors, replacing Baudouin Prot.

Lemierre, in his new role, will be responsible for implementing the group’s business development plan as well as the reinforcement of its governance and of its internal control measures.

Prot has resigned after the French bank agreed to plead guilty to violating US sanctions and pay nearly $9bn in fine.

Previously, Lemierre worked as an advisor to BNP Paribas and as its international representative with regulators as well as economic and political leaders since September 2008.

Prior to joining BNP Paribas, he served as president of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and also as head of the French treasury.

Additionally, BNP Paribas has also named Thierry Varène to the group’s executive committee as general delegate in charge of large clients.
