BNP Paribas has extended its partnership with Mistral AI for three years to significantly strengthen its generative AI capabilities.

The French bank first began collaborating with Mistral AI in 2023 and formalised the tie-up with a contract in 2024 that integrated the startup’s models into its internal large language model infrastructure.

The new agreement broadens the alliance to cover software, solutions, and joint research initiatives.

The renewal comes shortly after a Bloomberg report revealed Mistral AI is in talks with several European banks over a new cyber-focused model.

The tool is being positioned as a counterpart to Anthropic’s restricted-access Mythos model, capable of identifying cybersecurity vulnerabilities at high speed and scale. A launch timeline has not yet been confirmed.

Under the expanded deal, BNP Paribas and Mistral AI’s applied AI and engineering teams will collaborate more closely to co-develop generative AI tools tailored to the bank’s operational and regulatory needs.

The focus is on knowledge transfer, progressive deployment, industrialisation, and change management.

BNP Paribas will also evaluate the French AI startup’s compute offering.

The technology targets heavy data workloads involving both structured and unstructured information.

The partnership also targets high-compliance areas such as Know Your Customer (KYC) processes, where data sensitivity and regulatory standards are stringent.

The multi-year roadmap includes custom security tools, automated workflows, joint research projects, and specialised models aligned with business and risk management priorities.

Mistral AI’s models have been integrated into selected BNP Paribas applications, and the bank is preparing to roll out a generative AI employee assistant in 2026 to support summarisation, reformulation, translation, document generation, and information analysis.

Meanwhile, in December, HSBC signed a multi-year partnership with Mistral AI to drive generative AI across its global operations.
