South Africa’s First National Bank (FNB) has
announced that one of its customers has won the country’s lottery
by purchasing a ticket via FNB’s Cellphone Banking.

Purchases of Lotto tickets have been available via FNB Cellphone
Banking, FNB Online Banking and selected FNB ATMs. Winnings are
automatically paid into the customer’s FNB account within 48
hours.

South Africa has become one of the world’s
major hubs for mobile commerce and mobile banking. In September,
the CEO of rival bank Absa told RBI that her bank now has 1.4
million m-banking customers (see RBI

).

“The uptake of Lotto on our electronic banking
channels has exceeded our expectations,” said Len Pienaar, CEO of
First National Bank mCommerce, in a statement. The winning ticket
paid out ZAR2 million ($272,468).
