Italian banking group UniCredit has faced a security breach, which exposed the data of around 400,000 of its customers in Italy.
The bank blamed an unnamed third party provider in Italy for the breach, which concerns only personal loans.
The breach took place between two periods- first in September and October 2016 and later in June and July 2017.
The incidents did not affect passwords allowing access to customer accounts though there are possibilities of other personal data and IBAN numbers being compromised, the bank said.
The bank said that it is taking remedial measures, launched an audit and informed relevant authorities about the breach. At the same time, the bank also announced intention to file a claim with the Milan Prosecutor’s office in association with the case.
“Customer data safety and security is UniCredit’s top priority and as part of Transform 2019, UniCredit is investing 2.3 billion euro in upgrading and strengthening its IT systems,” the Italian lender said in a statement.
