Ulster Bank is planning to close some of its branches in Northern Ireland soon, CEO Jim Brown has said.

Brown was quoted by Belfast Telegraph as saying that the growing demand for online banking services would lead to the bank trimming its high street presence, which currently amounts to 75 branches.

"We have by far the largest network in Northern Ireland – 50% more than anyone else – and the number of branches will reduce over time," Brown added.

According to the company, branches account for only 16% of all the transactions, while mobile banking has increased from zero to 25% of all transactions in just two years.

In summer 2013, Brown announced plans to close 175 out of 214 branches throughout Northern Ireland and the Republic.

Though the number may reduce, the closure will completely depend on customer demand, which is currently shifting towards online and mobile banking.
