A majority of the US banks that received
bail-outs have not yet repaid any sums to the
Treasury.

According to a report from the
consultants SNL Financial, of the 715 financial institutions that
received funds, 138 have made full or partial redemptions; 564 have
not yet made any repayment and 13 have either failed, filed for
bankruptcy or been acquired.

The banks that have repaid in full are
generally the largest and healthiest banks. Based on first-quarter
results, the median asset size of the institutions that have
redeemed is $2.75bn; the median size of the lenders that have not
yet repaid is just $443.3m.

Although most of the banks have still not
repaid their TARP funds, the US Treasury has recovered most of its
TARP investment since the majority of the money went to larger
lenders that have exited the programme.

The total TARP investment made by the
Treasury was $204.9bn; $180.1 billion had been repaid as of 6 June
according to SNL.
