Canadian lender Scotiabank has unveiled plans to shut down several offices across the country, putting at risk hundreds of jobs.

Processing centres in Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg, Halifax, and Ottawa will be relocated to Toronto as part of the move.

The job cuts would be implemented over the next two years as the bank closes regional operations and consolidates the services into two high-tech hubs in Toronto.

The bank has however not released any data on the exact number of redundancies.

According to Scotiabank vice-president of corporate communications Diane Flanagan, the locations facing closure are seeing some duplication of work.

The latest changes are aimed at reducing duplication and increasing the use of technology, Flanagan added.
