Spain’s largest-lender, Santander, is to install more than 670
ATMs from US self-service vendor Diebold.

Deployment of the ATMs, all of which will use Diebold’s Agilis
software, will be completed in the first half of 2011.

According to Diebold, the ATMs will help Santander to offer a
level of service closer to the branch experience, with added
services such as deposit automation, advertising and other advanced
banking transactions.

Dave Wetzel, vice president and managing
director, Diebold EMEA region, said:”
Santander chose
Diebold for this project not only because of the quality of our
solutions, but because of our Spanish organisation’s ability to
deliver service according to the quality requirements of the
bank-to guarantee the needed availability level, which is so
critical in the self-service environment.”

Santander and Diebold are also currently
working together in other countries including Mexico, Brazil and
the US.

In November, Ignacio Villoch, manager for
communication and branding, strategy and innovation at Santander’s
closest rival, BBVA,
told RBI of his plans for BBVA’s next generation ATM, dubbed
Abil.
