Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) is planning to close at least 99 branches in 2015, as more customers embrace the digital wave in banking.
RBS managing director Moray McDonald said, "We are seeing a revolution in the way our customers want to bank. We have been literally candidly taken aback.
"We’ve decided there are some locations where footfall is so low our customers really aren’t using those locations.
"We’ve identified 99 branches we think we would close this year, but I have to say, this is a rolling process for us, so I don’t want you to take that as a hard number and the most we would do," McDonald added.
RBS has earmarked £1bn package to enhance its digital offering. Over 400 branches of the bank will be equipped with new technology such as iPads as part of the enhancements.
