Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) has suffered a technical glitch that has affected most of its subsidiaries, resulting in misplacement of customer payments across the institutions.
The glitch, which affected customers of RBS, NatWest, Ulster Bank and private bank Coutts, delayed nearly 600,000 transactions.
The issue impacted credits and direct debits and is said to also include tax credits and disability living allowance payments.
RBS spokesman said: "We have fixed the underlying issue, we apologise for the inconvenience caused and we are working flat-out to get these payments updated for our customers no later than Saturday."
